Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw

Overall Rating: 8 out of 10 Based on 1 Review

Ever since hulking lawman Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson), a loyal agent of America's Diplomatic Security Service, and lawless outcast Shaw (Jason Statham), a former British military elite operative, first faced off in 2015's Furious 7, the duo have swapped smack talk and body blows as they've tried to take each other down. But when cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist Brixton (Idris Elba) gains control of an insidious bio-threat that could alter humanity forever - and bests a brilliant and fearless rogue MI6 agent (Vanessa Kirby), who just happens to be Shaw's sister - these two sworn enemies will have to partner up to bring down the only guy who might be badder than themselves.

    Pros:

    Great action by all throughout.

The funny banter between Dwayne and Jason. Would be great to just see them keep going at each other.

    The cameos.

    Cons:

It felt forced having to go to Samoa and for them to fight there with old weapons.

Storyline could have had more in it compared to previous films from the franchise.

    Overall:

The ninth movie in the Fast and Furious Franchise and first spin off definitely bring out the big guns. Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham reprise their roles from the previous movies and are joined this time by Idris Elba who is a genetically enhanced ex-elite operative keen to cleanse the world. Then add in Vanessa Kirby with her fight skills into it and we have a recipe for some great action.

Where it can be a bit plain with the old storyline of the bad guy wants to introduce the virus to the world and needs to be stopped before it is too late, the action is imaginative and just as in previous Fast & Furious movies you need to go in with the mindset that anything can happen and unbelievable stuff is ok as long as it is done big.

Hobbs & Shaw definitely has the feel of a movie that has the Dwayne Johnson touch on it. It is less serious than what the Fast & Furious movies try to be and is more of a comedy with the banter between the stars getting into each other’s faces quite a number of times throughout with witty remarks and comebacks. There are also some surprise cameo’s that add to the humour and even continue through the credits. So usual rule applies of not leaving until the end! Overall, some good action with big explosions to wet the appetite for the next Fast & Furious when the whole family is back together.
