Gangster Squad

Overall Rating: 8 out of 10 Based on 1 Review

Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Josh Brolin and Sean Penn star in this 1940s chronicle of the LAPD’s battle with the East Coast Jewish Mafia. Helmed by Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer. In late '40s LA, the ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Penn) wears the crown, spinning a fortune from drugs, guns, prostitutes and—if he has his way—every wire bet placed on America's west coast. Despite doing so under the protection of his mob, the local police and politicians, a small crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Gosling), come together to try and bring Cohen down. The story is based on fact, revealed in a series of LA Times articles by Paul Lieberman.

    Pros:

Great storyline and even more interesting that the majority of it is based on a true story. Great acting and keeps your attention the whole time - there is never any boring bits. Great range of characters that mesh really well and through the action and drama provides funny moments too.

    Cons:

At times pretty violent but it adds to the storyline.

    Overall:

This is a great movie - definitely worth the watch! Sean Penn is so convincing as Mickey Cohen and sets the scene for a LA that is dominated by one man. Sgt. John O'Mara (Josh Brolin) is tough and you find yourself barracking for the cops that remove their badges to clean up the Cohen crime rig.
