Late Night

Overall Rating: 7 out of 10 Based on 1 Review

A late-night talk show host's world is turned upside down when she hires her first and only female staff writer. Originally intended to smooth over diversity concerns, her decision brings about unexpectedly hilarious consequences as the two women who are separated by culture and generation become united by their love of a biting punchline.

    Pros:

Emma Thompson’s performance striking fear into her employees.

    John Lithgow’s warm performance.

    Cons:

Some side storylines are not required in the movie.

    Overall:

Katherine Newbury (Emma Thompson) is a long time late-night talk show host with her head on the chopping block to be replaced. In a bid to get some diversity into her white male writing team, Molly Patel (Mindy Kaling) who is a chemical plant manager gets her chance after being in the right place at the right time. She doesn’t let that get in her way while making recommendations to turn the show’s fortunes around.

There is a mix of hilarity as well as serious moments throughout the movie and show the ups and downs of both main characters as they come to grips with their place in the world. Emma Thompson plays the very cold role well in a very “The Devils Wear Prada” situation with her staff scared of putting a foot wrong and risk being fired.

John Lithgow plays Katherine’s warm and loving husband Walter who is very knowledgeable and is suffering from Parkinson’s disease. Their relationship is tested while asking the question what is most important to them in their lives. Overall nicely written by Mindy Kaling and good performances throughout.
