Bethany Christian Care - The Plains Retirement Village

Overall Rating: 7 out of 10 Based on 2 Reviews

The Plains Retirement Village is situated in Eight Mile Plains, Brisbane QLD and aims to be relaxed, accommodating, spacious and fruitful for residents.

Residential Aged Care Facility (108 beds including 3 Respite places)

The Plains is a little different from some other aged care facilities, in that it operates on a 'house' (or 'lifestyle') model of care as opposed to a 'medical' model. This means that resident areas are as home-like as possible, with no effort spared to avoid the institutional or hospital-like environments that characterise, or used to characterise, the traditional aged care facility.

This difference is deeper than the physical fabric (which certainly does look and feel eminently home-like). For example, at The Plains, care is driven by residents' needs and preferences, not routines.

    Pros:

Fairly clean, secure and modern building.

    Cons:

The claim of Christian values and holistic care is simply false. Priority is not given to residents but rather on growing the business and giving the outward appearance of providing a life of quality. However, residents are ultimately neglected and forced to adapt to the facilities regimental care plan.

    Overall:

If you or your relative have high care needs, this place is to be avoided. The Plains have a very poor knowledge base concerning care for dementia sufferers and the staff interaction with residents is almost non existent.

    Pros:

Modern buildings and design, staff are very professional and respectful of residents. You can tell that the residents are their #1 priority. They have ageing in place. The location is huge and has beautiful gardens, pool, libraries and activity centres with many open spaces for families to visit. Good christian focus.

    Cons:

They only have limited times during the month and limited spots that you can visit to inspect the village. Their waiting lists are VERY long especially for limited spaces available for fully government supported residents.

    Overall:

I love this place and it's got to be one of the best in Brisbane. The staff were so friendly and very conscious of the privacy of the residents during the tour. The whole place has a great positive feel about it and I would have no hesitations in placing a family member there. The staff offer you afternoon tea while explaining all the options for you. The only downfall is that it's very hard to get into given the waiting lists are so long and many spots that become available are filled by residents who are moving from independent living units to the aged care section.
